Robert Davey (Folk Art)
Oils & Acrylics

We fell in love with Robert Davey's paintings the first time we saw them. They would probably fall into the category of "primitives" however, he thought they were better described as "nave." They have a unique style that is immediately recognized as his. Although he has worked in watercolor, oil and mixed media his palette was always incredibly subtle. His use of design is outstanding often using Pennsylvania Dutch patterns to illuminate his work. He sometimes chose to paint his own mat around his paintings. While he was well known for his depiction of birds, usually done in a humorous way, they were never trite. He loved to depict common-place objects (often his own) in his little still life paintings. He would sometimes use a dresser or a sideboard to display these items; occasionally including a little bird somewhere in his painting or perhaps an American flag..

Robert Davey was born in San Francisco where he also grew up. He studied at the California School of Fine Art. He took classes under the direction of Dong Kingman and several other recognized artists of that time. However, he never adopted the style of anyone else and worked on developing his own individual interpretation of the things he saw.

He began exhibiting his work in 1945 at the Maxwell Galleries and Gumps in San Francisco, Ca. where he had several shows. He has been represented in both watercolors and oils at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. One of his paintings was selected by the American Federation of Arts to be included in a special showing at the Manufacturer's Hanover Trust Gallery in New York City. He was also represented in a retrospective showing of San Francisco artists held at the Museum Legion of Honor. His work is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the city of San Francisco and the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art. He resided and had a Gallery of his own for many years in Carmel, California where he sold hundreds of his paintings which went all over the world.

Robert Davey died in 1994 and we feel very proud and fortunate to represent his work for his family. We know Robert Davey's work will not be easily forgotten and when people remember it they will undoubtedly have a smile on their faces for the tremendous humor and feelings he brought to his work.
